  3. COVID-19 Vaccination Appears Safe for Patients Treated for Hypothyroidism

Inactivated and mRNA COVID-19 vaccines appear to be safe for patients being treated for hypothyroidism, according to a new study presented at the Endocrine Society Annual Meeting ENDO2022 in Atlanta, Georgia. The study found that these vaccines do not cause significant changes in thyroid function and are not associated with an increased risk of emergency room visits or unscheduled hospitalizations.

“No previous studies have examined the possible relationship between the COVID-19 vaccine and unstable thyroid function control in patients receiving thyroid hormone replacement for hypothyroidism,” lead investigator David T.W. Lui, M.B.B., of the University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong, China. S., stated.” Our encouraging findings recommend that patients being treated for hypothyroidism receive COVID-19 immunization to protect against worse outcomes associated with COVID-19.”

The study evaluated an inactivated vaccine called CoronaVac and an mRNA vaccine, the Pfizer BioNTech (BNT162b2) vaccine; CoronaVac uses a killed version of the SARS-CoV-2 virus; CoronaVac is available in Asia, South America, Central America, It has been used in vaccination campaigns in various countries in Asia, South America, Central America, and Eastern Europe. Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines teach the body’s cells how to make proteins that trigger an immune response. The Pfizer and Modena vaccines are mRNA vaccines.

The researchers evaluated data from more than 47,000 COVID-19 vaccinated patients taking levothyroxine for hypothyroidism. Patients were divided into three groups: unvaccinated, CoronaVac vaccinated, and mRNA vaccinated. Patients who received either type of COVID-19 vaccine had no increased risk of needing a reduced or increased dose of levothyroxine; COVID-19 vaccination was not associated with an increased risk of emergency room visits or unscheduled hospitalizations.
